Years ago, a client visiting the Big Island of Hawaii asked, “What are your astrology readings about, and does astrology really work?”
I just finished giving her a long, nurturing Hawaiian massage, at a beach house near Kealakekua Bay during the holiday week in 2014. Since we just finished the healing session, so my intention was to answer briefly and clearly.
“Your astrology birth chart is a map for life. Learning about your personal birth chart and the current cycles helps navigate the road ahead. Perhaps you are interested in exploring what this new year has in store for you”. I explained.
“I don’t think I want to know my future”, she replied.
I was shocked. Her response totally surprised me. Naturally this conversation inspired a deeper contemplation in me, as I have been devoted to healing service with my astrology practice since 2000. I felt compelled to explain further.
I looked around the room of the beach house and saw a topographic map of Hawai’i Island on the wall. “What if you were driving over to Volcanoes National Park tomorrow?” I asked her since she was visiting the islands. “Would you ask someone what is the best route? Perhaps local could tell you the best place to stop to find at the black sand beach or enjoy a snack or coffee along the way. You may even learn where to best follow the speed limit signs to avoid a traffic ticket!
Getting an astrology reading is like asking a local guide for directions, but for the journey of the soul.
You can learn when it is best to steady your course in life when to stop and change direction, or what to look for along the way. You may even discover when to expect surprises, that support making big changes easier.”
“I’ll think about it”, she said.
Living in Hawaii, rain at the right time gives a bumper crop of coffee. Too much rain or wind during the winter months blows mango blossoms off the trees. I remember the year when the fruit farm I once managed had no mangos, and that was terrible! Sometimes, if there are too many mangos, you can't sell them anywhere, so you better get used to mango bread, mango pancakes, and dried mango. (Now I’m wondering, is there such a thing as too many mangos . . .)
So, you don't want to know your future! If you don't read the signs, how can you navigate the road ahead, or anticipate the gifts of the garden? Nature often offers plenty of clues for the current weather, so you can plan and prepare for a better tomorrow.
I’ve further contemplated her question. Why wouldn’t you want to know your future?

These days almost everyone I know is attached to their mobile phone or device, using tools to plan and prepare ahead. Before making a purchase, you check the internet for best shopping deals, when is the optimal time to buy plane tickets, reserve rental cars or get that next greatest gadget. When traveling, do you program your GPS or refer google maps for the quickest route or to find options along the way?
Perhaps you have a long commute to work. If you have the right tools, you may learn an alternative route in case of traffic jams at rush hour. Going on vacation? A look ahead with the right tool helps optimize your time, empowers choices for clear action, and may even support avoiding potential mishaps.
Does astrology really work? If you ask me, I’d tell you I use it as a resource. Just like my car gets me where I need to go, or my computer and phone supports me in staying connected, astrology is an ancient technology I use as a map for life today.
Astrology is not a belief system, it is a tool to help you see across cycles of time.
